Recommended sizes for YouTube channel art

YouTube displays channel art (also called the banner image) differently depending on the device. A single upload is cropped to fit televisions, desktops, tablets, and phones. Getting the dimensions right avoids cut-off text and awkward framing.

Surface Display size What to watch for
TV 2560×1440 (full image) Only surface that shows the entire upload
Desktop 2560×423 (wide strip) Top and bottom are cropped heavily
Tablet 1855×423 Narrower than desktop, sides trimmed
Mobile 1546×423 (safe area) Only the centre strip is visible

Recommended upload size: 2560×1440 pixels. Minimum safe area: 1546×423 pixels centred. Maximum file size: 6 MB.

How to use this helper

This tool doesn’t connect directly to YouTube. It works with any image you already have access to, either by pasting a direct image URL or by uploading a file from your device.

  1. Paste an image URL — right-click your banner image on YouTube, copy the image address, and paste it into the URL field above. Click Load to preview it.
  2. Or upload a file — choose an image from your device. The preview will appear immediately with the detected dimensions shown below it.
  3. Check the dimensions — the helper reports the actual pixel width and height so you can verify whether it meets YouTube’s requirements before uploading to Studio.
  4. Download a clean copy — save the image locally for your records, design files, or brand guidelines document.

Common channel art mistakes and how to avoid them

Text outside the safe area

Channel names, taglines, and social handles placed near the edges will be cropped on mobile. Keep all important text within the centre 1546×423 strip. Use this tool to preview how the image looks before committing.

Low resolution or compression artefacts

Uploading an image smaller than 2560×1440 forces YouTube to scale it up, producing visible blur. Always start with the full recommended size, even if you design at a smaller canvas and export at 2x.

Inconsistent branding across surfaces

Your banner, profile picture, and thumbnail style should feel like they belong to the same channel. See the brand consistency checklist for a structured approach to aligning your visual assets.

Forgetting to check on multiple devices

What looks perfect on a desktop monitor may crop badly on a phone. Open your channel page on both a desktop browser and the YouTube mobile app after uploading new art to verify the result.

Channel art as part of your visual system

Channel art is just one element of a larger visual identity. Creators who treat their banner, profile picture, video thumbnails, and intro cards as a coordinated system tend to build stronger brand recognition in search results and suggested feeds.

Frequently asked questions about YouTube channel art

What is the ideal YouTube banner size?

YouTube recommends uploading at 2560×1440 pixels. The safe area that displays on all devices is approximately 1546×423 pixels in the centre of the image. The maximum file size is 6 MB.

Can I download someone else’s channel banner?

You can inspect and save publicly visible banner images for reference, competitive research, or archival. However, the image is the intellectual property of the channel owner. Using it in your own marketing or branding without permission could violate copyright.

Why does my banner look different on mobile?

YouTube crops channel art differently for each device. On mobile, only the centre strip (about 1546×423 pixels) is shown. Text or graphics placed outside this safe zone will be cut off. Design your banner with the safe area in mind and test on multiple devices.

Does this tool access my YouTube account?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser. It does not connect to the YouTube API, does not require a login, and does not access any account data. You simply paste an image URL or upload a file.
